Despite the fact that I had to analyse this film for academic purposes, I throroughly enjoyed it.
In the world of the movie, it is possible to go to a clinic and have your memories of a particular person erased. It's centred around a couple - Joel and Clementine. She has him erased from her memory after they break up and he finds out. So, as a "fuck you" to her, he decides to undergo the procedure as well. The film is largely set inside his head as he tries to hide the memory of Clementine within other memories when he suddenly decides that he doesn't want to forget her.
meh. i'm not good at giving synopses....(i remember i used to tell people about books i'd read and try to convince them to read it by telling them about the book and it would always result in them saying that it sounded boring... =___=")
so yea,
google it.
imdb it.
stream it.
watch it.
I think for me, It's not a question of whether the good memories trump the bad.
I guess it'd be a little about what I learnt from those experiences and how these lessons learnt would be forgotten and I may make the same mistakes again.
But I think it's mostly about losing a part of myself if those memories are erased. I think it's that during the process of erasure, I would suddenly regret it, as Joel did in the movie. I think it's that I dislike letting go of things.
I guess after the procedure, I wouldn't know what I'd forgotten so it'd be okay. Ignorance is bliss, and all that jazz.
But I'd hate feeling like I'd forgotten something. I'd hate going to a place and feeling like I'd been there before with someone special. I'd hate that feeling like I'd lost something but not know what.
I'd live in a constant state of deja vu. I'd hate all these unexplainable emotions triggered by things that should mean nothing.
I wonder if I've caused anyone enough pain that they'd want to erase me?
If I could erase you....

lol it actually seems like a really interesting movie from the snippet of your description. i like the idea of it.
ReplyDeletei think its really important that time erases all things in the end, but i would hate to have a memory 'surgically' removed. if i wanted to forget something, itd have to be through natural processes, otherwise itd be like that part of your life never existed. think i will wikipedia this movie first.
I saw this film the other day on imdb! was searching for romance movies to watch :D it sounds so good! wanna watch it.
ReplyDeletebut this reminds me of this story I read once where a boy and a girl fall in love but they can't be together since they're from different worlds who are at war with each other. So the father proposes that they both take this potion that will help them forget everything that's ever happened about each other. They both agree but at the last minute the girl realises she doesn't want to forget, only the boy had already taken the potion. So he forgot but she didn't. Years later his father dies and the boy sets out for Italy on his father's dying wish. He bumps into the girl and is haunted by deja vu. They board the same train and the girl reveals their past and the potion. He asks her, "Why are you in italy?" She answers, "To see the vista dal cielo". The boy researches the potion and his past, discovers that the side effects of the other person not taking the potion is gradual deterioation and death within a few years. He tries to find her, and realises she must be at vista dal cielo, a tall hill. But by the time he gets there she is already gone. She had passed away the night before. The inn keeper at the top of the hill gave him the letter she left him. It said, "You made it". The boy realises that they had arranged to meet here before taking the potion, both swearing that whether or not they remember each other they'll remember to come here. She had also left him a photo of them when they were together, the only proof of their love now. The story ends with the boy standing at the vista dal cielo, "the view from heaven".
cool story ay.. >< rofl I got real carried away ><
@bobby I dont think time erases everything >__<" just because your conscious mind forgets something doesn't mean it won't remain embedded in your unconscious... driving you to act in certain ways and feel emotions that you can't explain.
